Artwork Description:

“Chikashsha saya” (I am Chickasaw) and it was reported that my ancestors were from the “Turtle Clan”. I designed this quilt wall hanging to represent my clan. Our homeland was along the banks of the Mississippi River where turtles were numerous and protected. They were considered sacred. When the shells were found, they were filled with river rocks. They were then strapped on the legs of the women shakers who participated in the traditional stomp dances. I machine quilted and appliqued the figures to complete this quilt. The hanger was custom made from Oklahoma cedar.
